"I think we had the perfect combination of different factors," said Gregg Schwenk, CEO and executive director of the festival. "We had our 10th anniversary, which heightened awareness. We had strong media partners."

While the MAOC documentary, “The First Ten,” premiered on broadcast television throughout southern California a week before the Festival’s premiere, it’s still available for viewing. The special is playing on Cox Cable’s Freezone as well as several city channels throughout Orange County.

Media Alliance Sponsors Film and Sneak Preview

How do you make a film about ten years of a film festival—with no budget? Jack Gallagher shared his secret when the Media Alliance of Orange County (MAOC) hosted the premiere of his film, "The First Ten," on April 8th, 2009—one week before its debut on KOCE-TV.

The film, Produced and directed by Gallagher and made under the auspices of the MAOC, celebrates a decade of the Newport Beach Film Festival. It was a big hit with the crowd. “The First Ten” features appearances by filmmaker/actor Chad Lowe, NB film festival director, Gregg Schwenk, founding sponsor Leigh Steinberg, Variety executive editor Steve Gaydos and actor Will Ferrell.

The all-volunteer production relied on members of the Orange County professional production community including a number of members of the local chapter of the Media Communications Association International (MCAi). Gallagher acknowledged the valuable efforts of cinematographers Bill Ennis of Media Magic and Bill O’Neill of Celtfire Productions, both Alliance as well as MCAi members. Production manager Nigel Etem, gaffer Brian Bishop and audio operator Linda Ivanov were among other valuable assistance recognized. Gallagher then pointed out to everyone’s amazement that thanks to the generosity of his crew and many others, the entire production had a budget of zero dollars!

Brown Forum on the campus of Orange Coast College was the site of the screening and the audience included a number of OCC film students as well as faculty. The crowd, including students, professionals and cinephiles, enjoyed the 26 minute film and appreciated the speakers that followed the screening. Besides Gallagher, the panel included Todd Quarterero, Co-Founder of NBFF, Erik Forssell, the festival’s Director of Programming and Janice Arrington, Orange County Film Commissioner. Media Alliance of Orange County co-president, Tim Keenan, also a member of MCAi, was the MC.

Gallagher’s film has been the subject of features on the OC Register and premiered on KOCE-TV four nights after the premiere. It will run on Cox Cable, Time-Warner Cable and other systems as well.

Gallagher said his goal was, “to tell the story of a genuine, 10 year local success story showcasing international cinema as well as honoring an event that is one of Orange County’s major social, cultural and educational experiences of the year.” According to the crowd’s enthusiastic response, he was quite successful.

Media Alliance Premiers Television Special in April

Principal photography has begun on "The First Ten," a video celebration of the first decade of the Newport Beach Film Festival. The production is part of the community service of the Media Alliance of Orange County and will premiere on southern California television stations in mid-April.

Interviews are being conducted by MAOC crews in Orange County and Hollywood to blend with more than 100 hours of archive footage of the Film Festival's initial ten years.

The Newport Beach Film Festival has evolved into a prestigious multicultural event, attracting over 40,000 attendees to Orange County. Since its inception, the Festival has presented many acclaimed movies such as the U.S. Premiere of "Crash" and other notable films. The Film Festival offers filmgoers a rare opportunity to meet the filmmakers.

The Media Alliance's television special in tribute to this first-class international film program will premier on KOCE-TV April 12th and will make its first showing in mid-April on the OC Channel, Time Warner, Cox-TV and various other television outlets throughout southern California.

Industry professionals, especially video editors, are encouraged to participate in this project in March by contacting Executive Producer Jack Gallagher at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

How to Create an Award-Winning Project

Around 60 people from the AD Club and the Media Alliance as well as interested media producers attended this panel in January on creating award winning projects.

The panel idea was prompted by the upcoming ADDY Awards produced by the AD CLUB of O.C. and other national organizations who produce award events, i.e. the Telly Awards, U.S. International Film Festival and MCA-I's Golden Reel Awards.

The panelists were award-winning producers of one or more of these types of organization's awards.

The panelists included Mike Kirsch from The Buddy Group, as well as Dee McQuade and Eric Spiegler from O'Leary and Partners

The luncheon program allowed the panelists the opportunity to share their own award-winning work. They gave the attendees advice on what goes into an award-winning video or media campaign, how to capture judges' attention and how to make the most out of your awards entries.
The speakers also talked about balancing the needs of the clients vs. what makes a high-quality end product. They also said that a project is developed and conceived to solve a problem or capture an audience, not to win an award. If it wins something after serving its primary purpose, that's fine.

Everyone touched on the importance of being recognized by their peers with awards like this and noted that having won awards does impact the "impression" that clients have of them. They also discussed the value of entering the various competitions and the effort and expense involved vs. the return.

The panel discussion was followed by questions from the audience and allowed the panelists time to have a dialog with the producers in the audience. They were joined for the Question & Answer segment by John Coleman from Twin Oaks Communications.

The joint event was the first time the Ad Club and Media Alliance had joined forces to create a panel like this and MAOC may consider joint events in the future.
